Arnold's Deafening Silence on Campaign Finance Reform

The Governor of California should say where he stands on an important campaign finance proposal as the California Assembly prepares to vote on it by the end of January, according to political watchdog group TheRestofUs.org.

"It's simply stunning that a Governor who ran on a platform of cleaning up Sacramento has remained silent on the biggest reform proposal to move in the legislature in more than a decade," said Derek Cressman, director of TheRestofUs.org. "For someone who is not normally shy about mouthing off, Arnold's silence on campaign finance reform is deafening."

Democratic legislators in the Assembly Appropriations Committee voted unanimously on January 19 to approve AB 583, sponsored by Loni Hancock, but not before gutting some of the bill's provisions that would have lowered the amount that politicians can raise from wealthy donors and banned contributions from lobbyists. The bill is modeled after successful laws in Arizona and Maine that provide candidates the option of running for office by forgoing all private fundraising and accepting a limited amount of public funds for their campaign.
