Doolittle Refuses to Tell Truth About
Abramoff Money
In 1st Interview Since Abramoff’s Indictment, California
Congressman Admits to Receiving Only $4,000 from Abramoff
and Wife
In his first interview since Jack Abramoff’s indictment,
California Representative John Doolittle continued to refuse
to tell the truth about how much money he has received from
Abramoff. In an interview ran today on the Tom Sullivan Show,
John Doolittle discussed the Abramoff scandal.
As the interview was taped last Thursday, Doolittle constituents
had no opportunity to ask their elected representative any
questions. According to one watchdog, the interview raised
more questions than it answered.
“Congressman Doolittle’s continued failure to tell the public
the truth about his contributions from Jack Abramoff did nothing
to resolve the many questions of his constituents,” said Ned
Wigglesworth, analyst for TheRestofUs.org. “Misstating facts
in pursuit of an easy end to the Abramoff affair will only
exacerbate public mistrust in government and make it more
difficult to get to the bottom of the question many Americans
are asking: did Jack Abramoff buy my congressman?”
Highlights from today’s interview:
-Doolittle admits to only receiving $4,000 from Jack Abramoff
and his wife, and $50,000 from Abramoff’s lobbying clients
and associates. As TheRestofUs.org
has reported, in truth, Doolittle has received $14,000
from Abramoff and his wife, and at least $118,250 from Abramoff’s
clients and associates.
-Doolittle says there is a conflict between legal and political
arenas, implying that he hasn’t answered questions because
of the legal ramifications of doing so.
-Doolittle refuses to return money as a “matter of principle”.
Thinks his colleagues that have done or are doing so are acting
like a scared “flock of birds” in catering to appearance over
truth. In nearly the same breath, Doolittle says he does not
want to create the appearance that he has done something wrong.
-Doolittle understands the public concern about the Abramoff
scandal and any connections between Abramoff and their elected
representatives.
