Watchdog Urges Court to Sentence Cunningham
to Maximum Ten Years
The clear, conscious corruption of his public
office for personal financial gain by former Congressman Duke
Cunningham merits the maximum ten years at his March 3 sentencing
hearing, according to campaign watchdog TheRestofUs.org.
"At a time when Americans needed to believe
in their government and its ability to protect them, Duke Cunningham
chose to auction off the defense budget of the United States
to personally enrich himself," said Ned Wigglesworth, analyst
for TheRestofus.org. "The cold and calculated corruption
of his office can only serve to bolster the cynicism and mistrust
most Americans feel towards their government and fortify our
overwhelming sense that our government is for sale."
TheRestofUs.org also called on any and all elected
officials, political parties, or other committees who received
campaign contributions from Cunningham, his conspirator Mitch
Wade, or alleged conspirators Brent Wilkes, Thomas Kontogiannis,
and John Michael to disgorge that money, regardless of when
the contribution was made or whether its equivalent has been
spent.
